I snapped this picture in Kirkuk, Iraq. Sometimes I wonder about these girls. What toll is the war taking on them?

Some boys at school in Kirkuk. All schools are either all male or all female. I wonder if any of these boys have been involved in the insurgency by now.

This little girl lived way out in the desert south of Kirkuk. I suppose she's safe from the violence.

All the kids were happy to pose for the camera, and all seemed friendly enough to soliders.

Alan , thank you so much for posting these beautiful photos. We need to put a human face on the war as often as we can.

I am in favor of the United States taking most of our troops out of Iraq as soon as we can, because it's increasingly apparent that Iraqis need to be in charge of Iraq and that a huge US troop presence is delaying the day that happens. But as we leave, we must do all we can to help these kids and their families survive, whether that means helping them gain safe passage out of the country or continuing indefinite humanitarian aid in country.

The "we broke it, we bought it" line certainly applies to Iraq, unfortunate as that is, and as avoidable as it was back in 2003.

Thanks for the nice comment.

I'm not sure how we can leave Iraq and still help out those we leave behind. The government is so ineffective that it is incapable of even using money that we might give it to use for its people's benefit.
